Where you could drink in a dimly lit atmosphere with loud music before switching locations to another dimly lit atmosphere with loud music because,Where you could stay out until midnight, until 2 a.m., hell, until 4 a.m., if you really wanted. Instead it’s 2020. Everything’s outdoors, closed by 11, and spaced out on the sidewalk.
I remember my first date post-lockdown. A friend of a friend asked me on a walk in early June. I tossed aside my wrap dress and selected what I thought was a comfy and cute ensemble: a seersucker shift and a white Lele Sadoughi . My final addition was a pair of strappy leather sandals. It’ll be fine, I thought. We’ll probably walk for, like, 15 minutes and then sit on a bench.. We passed over bridges, through parks, and across avenues. Not one stop was made. Because, as we found out by mile two, we had absolutely nothing in common. An hour and half later, I was back at my apartment, disappointed and with feet not even Quentin Tarantino could love. With the masks, we never saw each other’s faces.
