Crowds are paying their respects to Lieutenant Governor Sheila Oliver, who lay in state at the Statehouse in Trenton. Oliver died at age 71 last week.
in the rotunda of the New Jersey Statehouse in Trenton from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. after being escorted there by the Honor Guard of the New Jersey State Police.It’s the first time in state history an elected official has received the honor at the capitol, Murphy’s administration said.

Add your email below and hit"subscribe"Oliver’s body will be escorted by the Honor Guard to the Essex County Court House in Newark, where she will lie in repose from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Members of the public are invited to pay their respects then, as well. Oliver will be accompanied by a rotating Honor Guard from the Essex County Sheriff’s Office.
Oliver was a Newark native and longtime East Orange resident. Before becoming lieutenant governor in 2018, she represented parts of Essex County in the state Assembly and was a member of the East Orange school board.Oliver will be remembered with a memorial service at 10 a.m. at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark. The public is invited to attend.
