Brian Harrison, R-Midlothian, posted a video on Sept. 8 that showed a student confronting Melissa McCoul over gender content in a class course. McCoul was a senior lecturer in the English department with over a decade of teaching experience. Welsh fired McCoul the day after Harrison posted the video. However, Harrison was not satisfied and kept pushing for Welsh to be fired for “DEI and LGBTQ indoctrination.” Here are some things to know about Harrison, who has announced he is running for reelection to the Texas House.Harrison was elected in 2021 during an October special election after U.S. Rep. Jake Ellzey, R-Waxahachie, jumped to Congress. Harrison, backed by Sen. Ted Cruz, defeated John Wray for his old district, which includes Ellis county and is south of Dallas. Harrison has won reelection in 2022 and 2024.That the controversy with A&M started from Harrison’s account on X, formerly Twitter, is appropriate. Harrison is known for posting on social media, sometimes retweeting replies to himself or posting videos of himself talking. During the legislative session and special sessions, Harrison recorded himself on the House floor, often criticizing his fellow Republicans for, in his view, not being conservative enough.reported in July 2025 that Harrison had tweeted more than 3,500 times during the 140-day legislative session, which breaks down to at least 25 tweets or retweets a day.On Thursday, when news of Welsh’s resignation broke, Harrison celebrated on social media posting in all-caps: “WE DID IT! TEXAS A&M PRESIDENT IS OUT!!”in which a student confronted McCoul in her class about gender identity. The incident took place in the third week of Texas A&M’s summer semester,In one video, a female student and McCoul can be heard arguing over gender identity being taught in a children’s literature class. The student and lecturer are not shown. “This also very much goes against not only myself but a lot of people’s religious beliefs. And so I am not going to participate in this because it’s not legal and I don’t want to promote something that is against our president’s laws as well as against my religious beliefs,” the student could be heard saying in the video.“If you are uncomfortable in this class, you do have the right to leave. What we are doing is not illegal,” the lecturer said. Harrison also posted two audio recordings of the student meeting with Welsh. It’s unclear when the meeting took place. “Tell me what exactly you want changed?” Welsh asked the student. “I mean, you’re trying to pick a fight here. What do you want?”The student said yes and started to explain why but Welsh cut her off.The day after Harrion posted the video, Welsh released a statement saying he had directed the campus provost to fire the professor. That wasn’t good enough for Harrison, who all of last week posted numerous times that Welsh should be fired.Aarón is an Austin native who previously covered local government for The Kansas City Star and high school sports for the Knoxville News Sentinel.
