The new uniforms are the first major update to the Mounties' on-duty visage in three decades.
Frontline Saskatchewan RCMP officers will be swapping out their grey dress shirts for navy blue ones starting in July 2026. Saskatchewan Mounties are swapping the top half of their standard uniforms as part of a sweeping modernization of the force's frontline look.
Starting this month, Saskatchewan RCMP officers will be wearing navy blue shirts under their protective vests while on duty. The country-wide uniform update is the first for the national police force in 30 years, according to RCMP's media relations team. The colour of patrol officer shirts is shifting to navy blue from grey. RCMP commissioner Mike Duheme, in a press release, said the new shirts will be made from"more modern materials that enhance comfort and adaptability in different environments.
" Other aspects of RCMP's current standard uniform, like the navy pants with a gold stripe, will remain the same. The RCMP began reviewing its uniform policies back in 2019, based on employee feedback. Saskatchewan is the eighth province or territory to make the change permanent. PEI was the first, shifting to navy-blue shirts in summer 2025.
Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Nunavut, Yukon, Northwest Territories and Manitoba all followed suit. The Saskatchewan RCMP media relations team says on-duty officers may be wear both the new navy blue or the older grey shirts for a little while. According to the press release, the Mounties want to head off concerns with clear communication about the uniform switch-over.
"The RCMP understands that seeing a new uniform colour may cause confusion. The RCMP also understands that there have been incidents of individuals impersonating police," the release states. , during which the perpetrator, who was not an RCMP officer, wore an RCMP uniform and drove a marked RCMP vehicle. He killed 22 people and injured three others.
"If you ever have any concerns about the identity of the police officer you are interacting with, you can ask the officer for identification," the release notes. People can also call the non-emergency phone line at their local detachment or the toll-free operations line at 310-7267 to confirm if there is an officer at a location.
