Property owners are responsible for maintaining the private portion of the service line, including replacing any lead plumbing inside their premises and along their property coming from the meter, according to the department’s spokesperson. DWU sent the first notification letters, in English and Spanish, to 50,000 customers with unknown service lines on Oct. 29. On Nov. 4, additional notification letters were sent to 92,431 customers with unknown pipes.Six letters were sent Nov. 7 to residents with galvanized pipes identified on the private side, recommending that they be replaced.According to the city communications department, there is no lead in the city’s water.
