Here's what residents can expect to see when two state law enforcement agencies arrive in San Francisco on Monday.
a week ago. Troopers with the California Highway Patrol will roam key “high-crime” areas — including the Tenderloin — alongside city police, while the state's National Guard will mostly provide support in the background.
“The California National Guard’s presence in this is not going to be boots on the ground in San Francisco,” Major General Matt Beevers said during Friday’s press conference. “The support that we’re going to provide, really, consists of very talented and dedicated soldiers and airmen that do essentially criminal analyst work.”
The joint partnership among the San Francisco Police Department, the San Francisco District Attorney's Office and the two state law enforcement agencies was arranged by Newsom at the behest of San Francisco Mayor London Breed, with the governor and state Attorney General Rob Bonta earlier this month. Breed requested the joint partnership to help tamp down on open-air drug dealing and fentanyl overdoses in certain parts of the city.
Beevers said the state's National Guard is committing 14 criminal analysts to the operation, with a specific focus on disrupting drug rings and stymieing the flow of illegal drugs into San Francisco.
Duryee said that, in addition to patrolling city streets, his agency will be assisting local police by providing specialized training in detecting and deterring drug crimes and will use existing agency resources to help the San Francisco Police Department build legal cases against offenders.
