Everything you need to know about the World Figure Skating Championships.
At the World Figure Skating Championships starting tomorrow in Montpellier, France, there will be no Russians or Belarusians; their countries have been banned by the International Skating Union. That means that the current gold medalists in three disciplines—Russia’s Anna Shcherbakova, ice dancers Viktoria Sinitsina and Nikita Katsalapov, and pairs team Anastasia Mishina and Aleksandr Galliamov—will be unable to defend their titles.
With the top five finishers in pairs at last month’s Olympics out at Montpellier , the U.S. has a strong chance to win its first medal in pairs since 2002, when Kyoko Ina and John Zimmermann won bronze. Alexa Knierim and Brandon Frazier, the 2021 U.S. champions, had to withdraw from this year’s Nationals when Frazier tested positive for COVID, but they were given a spot on the Olympic and world teams.
The Russian women and their quads have been insurmountable obstacles in the quest for gold, even for the powerhouse Japanese team. Now Kaori Sakamoto, who won bronze in Beijing, may add a gold medal to her haul . The U.S. women, lacking quads , rely on their component scores to boost their totals; that strategy got Karen Chen as far as fourth place at last year’s Worlds.
The past year has been extraordinarily stressful for Zhou: Last March he entered Worlds as the U.S. silver medalist but failed to qualify for the free skate; in October he beat Nathan Chen, who had been undefeated for three years, to win Skate America; in January he won bronze at U.S. Nationals and qualified for the Olympic team. In Beijing, a few days after his free skate in the team event , Zhou tested positive for COVID and was forced to withdraw from his individual events.
