It's a familiar process: Take the kid to the doctor. Get a prescription. Go pick it up. But what if the common medication isn't available at your pharmacy?
When your child is ill, you'll do anything to help them feel better. If the current shortage has you searching unsuccessfully for a specific antibiotic or fever-reducing medication, here’s some advice from the experts:Call your child's health care provider. If an antibiotic is in short supply they may decide to use a different medication.
If your child has a fever and you can’t find fever-reducing medicine in liquid form, your pediatrician may be able to help you decide how best to dose your child – depending on the child’s age and size – with adult Tylenol or ibuprofen in a pill form.Consider that your child may not need Tylenol or ibuprofen just because they have a fever, said
a pediatrician with Riley Primary Care. If your child is running around and acting normal, don’t worry too much about what the thermometer says, as our bodies use fever to fight off infection.Even if your child is under the weather, you can treat fever nonmedically with measures like cool compresses on the forehead, back of the neck, or under the armpits, Dillon said. Sitting in a lukewarm bath or in front of a gentle fan may also help lower body temperature.
Other comfort measures for sick little ones include humidifiers or honey for sore throats for children beyond 1 year old, Stelzner said.If you find old medicine in your medicine cabinet and it’s past the expiration date, be sure to ask your doctor before you decide it’s fine to take it, experts agree. While some data suggests drugs may last longer than their expiration date, the expiration date is there for a reason.
