Here's the expert-recommended essentials for staying warm, fed and safe during freezing weather:having at least one gallon of water a day per person in your household for at least three days ahead of a freeze. Doing so is especially important in the event that freezing weather or power outages lead the city to issue a water boil notice. During a water boil notice, it's unsafe to use un-boiled tap water for drinking, cooking or brushing your teeth.
"Kroger is closely monitoring the weather and ensuring our stores are stocked with emergency kit supplies like batteries, bottled water, first-aid essentials and ingredients to make winter essential meals," Kroger spokesperson Teresa Dickerson said. Before you eat any canned food, check to make sure that the can isn't swollen, dented or corroded, and that none of your food looks or smells abnormal, DHS advises. If the power does go out, don't eat any perishable food that has been at room temperature for more than two hours. Harmful bacteria can grow in food at temperatures between 40 and 140 degrees, according to the DHS.
