The moment has nearly arrived for the Springboks to reveal their matchday 23 to face France in the World Cup quarter-final on Sunday.
Although the Springboks’ matchday 23 has already been revealed internally to the team camp on Wednesday, it will only be announced to the public on Friday as per the official World Rugby schedule.It has become customary under Rassie Erasmus and Jacques Nienaber for the Springboks to announce their team as early as possible in the week – usually on a Tuesday or Wednesday – depending on whether the game is on a Saturday or Sunday respectively.
“Without a doubt, it is tactical,” Erasmus said. “We have been mixing and matching for the last year and making sure that every single position has players who are just as good and, in some cases, we’re not even sure who is the best. Do they keep Pollard at 10 and Libbok on the bench? Or go the opposite direction, and pick Pollard on the bench as an insurance policy, while starting Libbok?
