Emmanuel Clase has already allowed more earned runs this season (9) than all last year (5).

CLEVELAND, Ohio – It’s easy for baseball fans to lose faith in their team’s closer. Just consider what is happening to Emmanuel Clase, perhaps the best closer in baseball since 2021.He had a 0.61 ERA in 74 innings.

This season he has already allowed more earned runs than he did in 2024 . He’s 4 of 6 in saves situations. He’s allowed 20 hits in 10 1/3 innings. As a friend of mine told me several times, “How hard is it to get three outs? That’s all he needs to do.”Why Progressive Field is iconic, some attendance info — Terry Pluto’s Guardians ScribblesThink about the job description of a closer: He either saves the game or he blows the game. Nothing in-between. Win or lose. Good or bad.But even some of us who love baseball get mad when the closer indeed saves the games – but terrifies us. He walks guys. He gives up a hit. He ends up being surrounded by more runners than a track coach. Most fans say, “I don’t like scary! I want a new closer! Just get the three outs!!! Come on: 1-2-3.”For a while, the analytics types insisted there was no difference between recording three outs in the ninth compared to any of the earlier innings. They had a lot of data about how coming into the seventh inning with runners on base was harder than being a closer in the ninth inning of a tight game. They talked about “high leverage” situations. Yes, it’s more demanding entering the game with runners on base. But even if that reliever fails in the seventh, the game isn’t over. Two more innings to play. But blowing the game in the ninth inning? Failing to get that last out? Walking off the mound knowing you lost the game?I remember Wickman saying you needed “the guts” to walk into the locker room after blowing a save “with your head held high.” Allen talked about not showing any doubt to your teammates, even if you are feeling it and knowing you let them down. They worked hard for three hours to hand you a lead, and you can’t even get three outs? It’s an awful feeling for a closer. It’s also why some guys crack under the pressure. Paul Shuey was a very good set-up man for Cleveland from 1996-2002. But in save situations, he was 23 for 42 . A good closer converts at least 85%. Shuey had a strong arm. He was a solid reliever. The closer role was not for him – or most relievers. Watching the three-time All-Star closer unravel in the playoffs last season was shocking and painful. This was a man who had allowed only five earned runs in the entire 2024 season covering 74 innings. In the playoffs, eight earned runs in eight innings. In the regular season, it was two home runs in all of 2024. And it was three homers in the playoffs. He wasn’t hurt. He wasn’t tired, at least based on the velocity of his pitches. He was still pounding on the door of 100 mph with fastballs and cutters.Baseball has a stat called BABIP: batting average balls in play. It means what is a player’s batting average when he hits a fair ball off a pitcher. One thought is the sample size is small. Clase has been at least somewhat unlucky. Some of those batted balls are finding holes – compared to being caught last season. But the fact is Clase is giving up more “barrels,” or hard hit balls, this season compared to a year ago. I can go into theories such as needing to throw more sliders or whatever. I have noticed he’s not pitching inside. Clase is known for drilling 100 mph fastballs on the fists of hitters, breaking their bats. But not often this season. But Guardians manager Stephen Vogt said: “He’s getting hit. He’s leaving the ball over the middle more than he should.”. “Emmanuel Clase has been the best closer in the game for a number of years. He’s getting hit … but he’s still the best closer on the planet. There are some things we’re going to continue to work with him on. Emmanuel Clase is going to get the ball in the ninth inning when he’s available.”inning to save Cleveland’s 6-4 victory over the Yankees on Monday. But that’s because Clase had pitched in each of the previous three games. Four in a row is risking an arm injury. Vogt said he also gave Clase a day off in Tuesday “because he threw 30 pitches on Sunday.” Smith recorded his second save in Tuesday’s 3-2 victory over the Yankees. At a recent press conference, Guardians president Chris Antonetti mentioned that Clase “made it look easy last year.” So true, especially because there’s nothing simple about getting those last three outs. Otherwise, teams wouldn’t be searching for closers as often as they do.The team should not hint about any changes. This is the biggest crisis of confidence Clase has faced since coming to Cleveland in the Corey Kluber deal with Texas after the 2019 season. The 27-year-old pitcher doesn’t need to hear any public statements about his bosses having doubt in him. The Guardians have options for the closer job. Cade Smith and Hunter Gaddis both have the physical talent to do it. But there is no reason to rush to make a change. This season is young. Clase has a tremendous track record. He appears to be healthy. There is time to work with him on pitch selection and other aspects of the job.If you purchase a product or register for an account through a link on our site, we may receive compensation.and agree that your clicks, interactions, and personal information may be collected, recorded, and/or stored by us and social media and other third-party partners in accordance with our
