The nearly two-decade collaboration between Steven Spielberg and Tony Kushner led to a movie the Oscar-winning director never thought he would make: one based on his own life. For VF, the duo reflect on bringing TheFabelmans to life:
—there was a moment of you saying, ‘I’ve got to make up my mind whether I’m going to do this or not,’ ” he says. “So right at the last possible moment, when/if we were going to go into production, you had to say, ‘Let’s do it.’ ”Spielberg actually made it? “We worked on it a little bit duringjust as a way of distracting ourselves from how scary it was that we were actually going to start filming,” Kushner says. “We had one long meeting at your apartment, I remember.
That was where they left it, at least for a while. “We dropped it,” Kushner says. “And then as we got to know each other and work with each other for the next 20 years, it kept coming back up as, I think, a joke between us. But eventually we really began to talk about it as something that you might be interested in doing.”
“When my three sisters moved back to Arizona to be with her, to live with her, he was simply creating an environment where we wouldn’t be mad at her. It was okay with him that we could be mad at him. And it was the greatest sacrifice that I think my father ever made for a family he truly loved and counted on.
Spielberg’s mother died in 2017 at the age of 97. Her second husband, Bernie Adler, who inspired the Rogen character, had already passed away in 1995 at 75. By the time Spielberg and Kushner began seriously considering makingdayenu It wasn’t that he was waiting for both of his parents to pass before telling their story. His mother, a pianist and painter who later owned a restaurant in Los Angeles, craved the spotlight and undoubtedly would have loved becoming such a scene-stealing presence in one of her celebrated son’s movies. “She said, ‘When are you going to make the movie about all of us?’ ” Spielberg says. “My mom was a real performer. The restaurant, the Milky Way, was like her theater. It was like her stage.
