, apps, and whether what is now called “assisted” marriage rather than “arranged” can actually be a positive thing, in spite of much external misunderstanding of the practice.– i.e., plenty of romantic chops out the gate – plays Zoe, a documentary filmmaker who lands on a new subject when her neighbour and childhood best pal Kazim , who is British-Pakistani, decides to agree to his parents’ wish for an “assisted” marriage.
With the intention of presenting the cultural practice openly and positively, Zoe follows Kazim and his parents from London to Lahore to make her doc and for Kazim to meet his would-be bride.They meet the quippy Mo the Matchmaker , who sets them on the first journey in motor-mouthed fashion.plays Zoe’s well-meaning but foot-in-mouth-racist white English mother, while Kazim’s parents – especially his defiant mother – also often steal the show.
You can accuse the film, written by Jemima Khan and directed by Shakur, of being paint-by-numbers, but it does have some self-awareness about it: it takes theframing device, of couples speaking candidly and adorably to camera about how they met, and verbally references the film that it’s stealing from. And it’s made by Working Title, the producers who made, so it’s obvious where this romcom will go. But there’s something comforting and fun about watching it get there.
