“If the invasion of initiation sites continues at this alarming rate, we will run out of sacred land traditionally earmarked for circumcisions, which has been an ancient practice in the Xhosa culture.”
These sentiments were expressed by concerned residents and traditional leaders after two major initiation sites in Khayelitsha township in Cape Town were invaded in the last 20 months. The invasions started in March last year under level 5 lockdown.While all seemed to be going well around the conference venue, the mood was totally different in many negotiation rooms, where tension has been thick through the week.
