Spectrum News 1 talks to Celia Cole, CEO of Feeding Texas to discuss food insecurity in the Lone Star State, which is one of nine states that has a higher food insecurity rate than the national average.
PUBLISHED 3:31 PM CDT Sep. 30, 2022President Joe Biden urged Congress Wednesday to permanently extend the child tax credit, raise the minimum wage and expand nutrition assistance programs. It’s all part of his push to end hunger in the United States by 2030.
“If a parent cannot feed a child, there’s nothing else that matters to that parent,” said Biden. “If you look at your child, and you can’t feed your child, what the hell else matters?” “The Biden Administration’s vision is really going to be transformative, if we can enact it,” said Celia Cole, CEO ofOne in eight Texans — or about 13% — experience food insecurity. That's nearly 4 million people. It's particularly an issue for Texas kids, with 1 in 5 not knowing where their next meal is coming from. And more than 50% of households that receive SNAP benefits have kids.
