COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Columbus Blue Jackets once again did not get lucky in the 2024 NHL Draft lottery on Tuesday night and will select fourth in this year’s draft.
The Blue Jackets, who finished the 2023-24 season with the fourth-fewest points , had a 9.5% chance to move up and select first overall. The San Jose Sharks, who had the best odds to win the lottery, will pick first overall. The 2024 NHL Draft will take place on June 28 and 29 at the Sphere in Las Vegas.
The likely first overall pick this year is Boston College center Macklin Celebrini. A freshman at BU last year, Celebrini was this year’s Hobey Baker Award winner, which goes to the best player in college hockey, scoring 32 goals and 68 points for the Terriers in 38 games. He also played for Team Canada at the 2024 World Junior Hockey Championships as an underage player and had four goals and eight points in five games.
The Blue Jackets have never picked first overall in an NHL draft since 2002, when they traded with the Florida Panthers for the first pick on the day of the draft. They selected Rick Nash, who had 289 goals and 547 points in a 16-year NHL career.
