Elsewhere columnist Sidney Skolsky maintains that he gave the award its nickname, and it has also been attributed to academy librarian Margaret Herrick, who said the award looked like her Uncle Oscar. While the awards appear to be made of solid gold, they are actually constructed from solid bronze, before being plated in 24-karat gold. Each statuette is rumoured to be worth $400 , but this is not actually the case.
In 2015, a Los Angeles judge ruled that an Oscar statuette won in 1942 by Joseph C Wright for Best Art Direction in the Rita Hayworth musical My Gal Sal – which was previously sold for $79,200 – could be reclaimed by the Academy for $10 , as reported by the Independent. And a few years ago a new rule was put in place so that anyone who has an Oscar and wishes to sell it must first offer it back to the Academy for $1, or around 78p.
