Former five-star Jeremiah Smith might've changed the equation for what is possible for freshmen.
COLUMBUS, Ohio — When Ohio State kept five-star wide receiver Jeremiah Smith’s commitment last December, coach Ryan Day feigned — or, at least, appeared to — fainting. The results this year have shown why.
Devin Sanchez, a five-star cornerback from Houston, officially signed with Ohio State on National Signing Day, ending one of the easiest out-of-state recruitments the Buckeyes could hope for. He shut down his recruitment months ago, and while that was unlike Smith, he might end up having a similar role to Smith in year one.
Sanchez has everything most coaches desire in a No. 1 cornerback: He’s got great length and has great speed and comes from an area with great competition — he plays for North Shore High School, one of the top programs in one of the most talent-rich states in the country. There’s Jermaine Mathews Jr., Calvin Simpson-Hunt and Aaron Scott on the depth chart as well, who have all been in the program. But Sanchez might have as much talent as any of them.
