Ohio State's offensive and defensive coordinators talked on Monday. Here's what they said.
COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State’s coordinators, Brian Hartline and Matt Patricia, spoke to the media on Monday for the second time this spring. It’s the first time they were made available since spring practice began, meaning it was the first time they each had a look at what type of unit they’ll have.
What Ryan Day said about Ohio State football’s championship team visiting the White House After March Madness loss to Tennessee, Ohio State women’s basketball’s Jaloni Cambridge sees a silver lining On C.J. Hicks, who has made the transition from linebacker to defensive end: “He’s a tremendous guy. Just the energy and excitement...Skillset wise, he’s really unique. He can play on the ball, off the bal.” On the adjustment from the NFL to college, and not be too critical when recruiting:"We are very critical of all of it because there’s enough body of work. You’re trying to look at football intelligence and what they’ve learned and how they’ve grown." He said there’s an aspect of knowing that they have to teach them the game.Said it will be critical to have depth along the defensive line, as things evolve through the season. When asked about getting back on the recruiting trail: “Been a little while for me on that deal. The whole thing has completely changed, there’s so much coming at these guys so fast.” Said his approach is to be as direct as possible with the recruits, and trying to understand as much as he can about each individual player. On why coaching at Ohio State isn’t a step back: “I’m very blessed for my NFL career, I was really lucky. I’ve coached great, great players...But I started off as a college coach, that was where people really impacted me as a young man.” He said coaching at Ohio State is a great chance to coach the game. On adapting his schemes, and how much that relies on the nickel spot: “Nickel is huge, big nickel safety has been a position that’s fun to move around.” Said those defensive backs can move and are big. On this year’s defense being as good as last year’s: “I could hate to do that too early, because I wasn’t here last year, but we have great young men here right now.”On tight end Max Klare: “The tight end position is a great opportunity to create mismatches, in the run game or the pass game...It’s really a hard focus on self-development.” On balancing his time with the offense as a whole and receivers: “I think receivers, that room, I’ve got some good veteran leadership. The top of the room is well-secured and those guys are doing a good job and they’re really deep...On the field, yeah, I’m trying to watch a lot of things.” Noted it’s a balancing act that he’s not a pro at yet. On where second-year wide receiver Jeremiah Smith has grown as a leader: “He’s not going to say a whole lot, but he’s been a little more outspoken, I think he’s speaking a little more in the room. He’s just another year older, and another year of improvement.” On the running back splits, he says he doesn’t know how it’ll play out, and that the season is more like the NFL. But having multiple guys is always important. On his impressions of the three quarterbacks: “I would say that, first thing, if I can sever off previous years, without being judged by years past, I’m impressed with how these guys have grown. We’ve already seen improvements.” Said they’re being able to push installs now with the offense. On receiver Mylan Graham: “Not that he’s trying to, but it’s easy to minimize the work you didn’t get. This past winter, he went through it...He’s made a lot of great strides. This spring is really great for him, this is still his first spring. He’s just chasing making that play.” On learning from new offensive line coach Tyler Bowen: “Working through run game install, I’d say that we’ve done a great job of putting together a great offensive staff. I’m really excited about it, honestly.” On freshman receiver Quincy Porter: “The room is really healthy, I’d say that ultimately the newer guys always dictate how good the room can be....All four of those guys are doing a good job of learning the offense, culturally doing a good job of what’s expected.” On why things are different now than his previous offensive coordinator stint: “It is different, I couldn’t tell you why. The staff around me is awesome...Try not to waste a day of that.” If you purchase a product or register for an account through a link on our site, we may receive compensation.and agree that your clicks, interactions, and personal information may be collected, recorded, and/or stored by us and social media and other third-party partners in accordance with our
