Mets and Pete Alonso remain at an impasse in contract negotiations
Mets infielders Brett Baty and Mark Vientos have been instructed to begin taking reps at first base in case Pete Alonso doesn't re-sign.
With the current roster construction, Mets manager Carlos Mendoza intends to create competition for the job at first base. With Vientos’s spot on the Mets roster solidified, this could mean that he’ll slide over to first base, and a platoon of players with defensive flexibility will share playing time at third.Mets left fielder Brandon Nimmo had already played in the big leagues when Alonso was drafted in 2016. Alonso was his teammate when he hit free agency in 2022, but Nimmo’s contact talks went much smoother than Alonso’s.
