What do moviemakers owe a community that they use and profit from?
A century ago, outsiders came to the Osage reservation for the tribe’sJoe Conner, my cousin and closest friend, created a memorial to victims of the “Osage Reign of Terror” about two years ago. In 10 panels illustrated with archival and family pictures, he described what came before and after the murders of possibly hundreds of Osages after one of the largest oil deposits in the United States was found on their land.
By 2021, the lively and deadly Fairfax depicted in the movie had gone the way of the Pierce-Arrows that a century earlier conveyed oil-rich Osages along crowded Main Street. Run-down buildings, some crumbling, greet visitors now. Few businesses exist. Vacant houses dot bumpy brick-paved side streets. The scores of White people who profited from the wealth of swindled and murdered Osages had long ago moved away.
Now, “Osages living in Fairfax and other parts of Osage County have poverty rates far exceeding that of the general U.S. population,” Joe wrote in his “Killers of theJoe, a PhD psychologist, health researcher, local newspaper publisher and co-director of the Fairfax Community Foundation, hoped his posters would engage visitors in his mission to “rebuild Fairfax and restore hope to our left-behind community … today languishes in neglect and dereliction.
The Scorsese film is in theaters this month. In Fairfax, some of us will keep trying to save the Tall Chief Theater.
