To ensure schools are the engines of a democratic future that they are purported to be, students must be taught how to take civic action on injustice as they’re experiencing it now.
As apocalyptic as 2020 feels, what concerns me most is that the crises of the moment are not anomalies. Rather, they are the compounded, sudden consequences of our existing systems and structures collapsing. More than anything, to me, living through this moment has reinforced the necessity for drastic change in our political and economic systems.
I am ready to hold decision-makers accountable for actively failing to address the injustices in this country and creating an environment during this fall where it is nearly impossible for many marginalized students to learn effectively. The shortcomings of our education system don’t rest with our teachers, some of whom areto do their jobs, or even administrators and individual schools.
