For Transcendence, literElly spoke to pwcdanica, CunninghamMPLS, PaigeKreisman, GerriCannon, and more about why they chose to get involved in politics, what challenges they’ve faced along the way, and the joys of representing their communities:
talked to us about why they chose to get involved in politics, what challenges they’ve faced along the way, and the joys of representing their communities. How has your identity shaped your political awareness, personal politics, and desire to work in politics?“I think being trans is really why I’m in politics. I don’t think I’d be in politics if I wasn’t.
“You’re making a statement just by running. You are working to create a better life for ourselves and for the people around us. And I would definitely encourage you to go to training for a lot of organizations that help people learn how to run for office. Understand your community. Run for office just because you want to, run for office because there are issues in your community that you want to help solve. Run because you know the people in your community and you want to work with them.
When I was out door-knocking during the campaign, I would actually tell people that I am trans, because it felt important to me that folks understand the fullness of my lived experience and my perspective, and I was 100% of the time met with love and support. And these were folks who didn’t know me already, these weren’t folks who I already had previous relationships with. These were strangers.”“I don’t have to guess. I can tell you ‘yes’ based on data.
“We need to get more people involved in politics. That in my mind, that’s the only way that we’re going to be able to get the kinds of ideas and resources that people need, and think about the intersections between communities.
