The supermax contract is what was traditionally known as the designated veteran extension. A player with seven to nine years of NBA experience can qualify for a contract worth 35% of the NBA salary cap, or 30% if the player re-signs with a team other than the one that gave him a rookie max extension.
If he does sign a supermax extension, Doncic’s in line for an enormous payday. He qualifies to earn 35% of the cap as a result of, clearing the way for the league to approve raising the salary cap 10% each year for the next several seasons — the maximum allowed under the most recent collective bargaining agreement between the NBA and its players.
