Hamas says its political leader Ismail Haniyeh has been killed in Iran. But the group's military leader Yahya Sinwar is in hiding as Israel pursues him after the 7 October attack. Here's how the militant group's twin power structure works.
On 7 October, the Palestinian group Hamas launched a surprise attack from Gaza into southern Israel , in one of the most serious escalations of the Israel-Palestinian conflict in years. The attack resulted in the deaths of 1,197 people, mostly civilians, according to official Israeli figures. Militants also seized 251 hostages, 111 of whom are still held captive in Gaza, including 39 the military says are dead.
Its 1988 founding charter called for the destruction of Israel, although Hamas leaders have at times offered a long-term truce, or hudna in Arabic, with Israel in return for a viable Palestinian state on all Palestinian territory occupied by Israel in the 1967 war. Israel regards this as a ruse. Hamas opened its political office in Qatar's capital Doha in 2012 and several Hamas officials including Haniyeh used to spend time in Doha.
