I cover all manner of console and PC games, but if it’s about looting or shooting, I’m definitely there. If I’m watching something, it’s usually science fiction, horror or superheroic.
In a year of AAA blockbusters, it may be somewhat confusing to outsiders how what appears to be a pixelated card game is grabbing a GOTY slot, when a number of other stellar games were not nominated.
It is hopelessly addicting. I too was in the “what is Balatro?” camp as recently as this week, but after playing even just a few rounds you can see why everyone is obsessed. There is a collection of dozens of “Jokers,” where you will collect five at a time for your run. They have special abilities like say, any Club card gets a 3x multiplier. Or you get a multiplier added any time you have played a certain hand during a run . One amazing one is the ability to have only four cards make a straight or a flush, making say, a Royal Flush more common than you’d ever see otherwise.
There are Tarot cards that you can use to transform parts of your deck, as in, you can convert two cards to hearts, in order to make flushes easier to find as you play. .
