Here's what the experts say 👇

Aspartame is about 200 times sweeter than regular table sugar. It was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 1974 for use as a table top sweetener and as an additive in chewing gum, breakfast cereals and dry bases for foods.

Aspartame is very sweet, meaning much less is needed in products to create the same taste as sugar and it has a calorific value of almost zero. The low-calorie sugar substitute can be found in soft drinks, gelatin, sweets, desserts, and more. One group of experts, the International Agency for Research on Cancer , said aspartame is a "possible carcinogen".

A World Health Organization expert group that evaluates the safety of food additives for consumption by consumers has reaffirmed that the artificial sweetener aspartame is safe when consumed below certain daily levels. Francesco Branca, director of the Department of Nutrition and Food Safety at the WHO, during a press briefing said: “Our results do not indicate that occasional consumption should pose a risk to most consumers. We're not advising companies to withdraw products nor are we advising consumers to stop consuming altogether. We're just advising a bit of moderation."
