OpEd: 'To profess [Black conservatism] is to flatter yourself with the idea that your success is your own, a replicable example for others to follow, but also to give yourself the right to scorn those you believe have fallen short.'
From the start, the tensions were palpable in my house, though I grew up with a loving, supportive mom who let me explore my curiosity and answered my incessant questions. Her conservatism was neither toxic nor bigoted, and she didn’t aggressively impose it on me or my siblings. If we disagreed, it was clear she simply wanted to protect us from the anti-Black world outside of our bubble, and she hoped that as we grew older, the racism she'd faced growing up would dissipate.
So, college complicated my relationship with my family, with the core of what I thought was my identity. The South prides itself on strong faith and tradition, and my family was no different. But I wondered: How can a God supposedly full of love and mercy allow for Black and brown people to suffer for so long? It didn’t make sense.
the conservative Black folks in my family could not separate the harshest of their religious ideals from determining their political choices and they voted for him anyway. In particular, they noted, Black voters tend to be more conservative when not influenced by social pressure. In essence, voting solidarity among Black people has remained particularly salient in our community, despite the nuanced views many of us share with one another.
