What the fashion industry should expect at the COP26 Climate Change Summit.
to reduce the footprint of their own facilities by taking steps such as investing in renewable energy and improved wastewater treatment equipment. This is a notoriously difficult task as fashion’s supply chain is long and complex, and often brands don’t even know who their suppliers are. However, the biggest obstacle by far is a financial one: most brands work with a multitude of factories, and those factories supply to many brands simultaneously.to pay for factories to make improvements.
Last year, H&M, Nike and other fashion companies wrote a letter to the head of Vietnam urging a shift away from coal and to expand renewable energy capacity. Advocates say that type of engagement should be much more common from fashion.“Countries where most apparel manufacturing is done—that’s where the majority of [brands’] emissions are. That’s where they need to be tracking the policy developments,” says Cummis.
“Monitoring what's happening in supply chain countries is important, but I would say, going a step further in terms of engaging with policymakers,” Malas says. “[Brands need to let] them know that as an important user of energy in their countries and a big player in the economy, that they expect to see a rapid transition to renewable energy and getting rid of coal from the energy grid, otherwise they would need to reconsider how they might need to shift their supply chain to meet targets.
