What does it mean for a cop to be relieved of duty? Disciplinary processes explained after shooting
Amid his arrest, charges and court appearance, authorities announced Officer Galib Chowdhury had been"relieved of his duties" pertaining to the police force.
An officer may be relieved of duty administratively for issues including instances of improperly handling a call, improperly handling a scene or something related to actions among coworkers, Griffith said. When an officer is working the desk he or she also cannot work overtime or extra jobs.The second type of being relieved of duty is to be relieved of duty at home, meaning the person can’t do any police work but must be available Monday through Friday at their residence.
While Officer Galib Chowdhury has been accused of doing something criminal, a public information officer for Houston police refused to answer any questions related to his specific case, so it was not immediately clear which scenario might be applicable. The police representative also repeatedly refused to provide information about the police disciplinary or termination processes in general, rather than specifically about Chowdhury's case.
After the investigation is concluded, it would go through the police internal affairs process, to the legal department, to the Independent Police Oversight Board, then to the Administrative Discipline Committee, composed partially of civilians, who would make a discipline recommendation, and then it would go to the chief.“At the end of the day, the chief has the final determination to either raise it, lower it, do whatever he wants with that process,” Griffith said.
