One political observer said the field remains open for a late entrant, ideally 'another Katie Britt.'
Rep. Barry Moore , left, and Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas during a House Judiciary Committee Field Hearing, Monday, April 17, 2023, in New York. exit from the U.S. Senate race before it officially began drew a mix of indifference, relief that he will stay focused on the SEC and even a touch of mockery.
“Paul Finebaum has been a fixture in living rooms, tailgates, and truck radios across Alabama for decades, and his decision not to run for the United States Senate means folks in Alabama and around the nation can keep enjoying his insightful conversations surrounding college football,” said U.S. Rep.“I respect Paul, appreciate his impact on Alabama, and I’m glad we’ll keep hearing his voice on the airwaves.”’s campaign did not respond to a request for comment. The Alabama Farmers Federation, whose FarmPAC is endorsing Marshall, showed little interest in Finebaum’s decision. “The Federation generally focuses on supporting its endorsed candidates and doesn’t engage in speculation about others,” said Jeff Helms, spokesperson for the group.a U.S. Navy Reserve captain and former national security adviser to Tuberville in the Trump administration, said Washington is no place for a political newcomer. “Finebaum is a gifted media star, but D.C. is politics at the highest level—no place for a beginner or Tennessee fan,” Murphy said.’s campaign used the news to spotlight his Senate bid. Hudson is a former U.S. Navy SEAL sniper and the owner of the Shooting Institute, which trains law enforcement officers in deadly force scenarios. “Jared continues to receive strong support from people all across Alabama who want a leader committed to putting Alabama First,” his campaign said in a statement. “He’s focused on the issues that matter to everyday Alabamians: lowering the cost of living, securing our borders, protecting the unborn, shrinking the federal government, and standing with President Trump. His grassroots campaign remains full steam ahead, and Jared looks forward to earning the support of Alabama voters in the Republican primary on May 19.”. Finebaum, 70, has been a longtime voice in SEC football, a personality on the SEC Network and ESPN, and an author known for promoting the conference. He had flirted with a Senate run, telling OutKick in September that he voted for Trump in 2024 and was inspired to consider the race after the killing of Charlie Kirk. Jess Brown, a retired political science professor at Athens State University and a longtime observer of Alabama politics, said the field remains open for a late entrant. He said the race could shift significantly if a strong female candidate emerges. “There is still time for a candidate to enter the race, especially if he or she already has some degree of name recognition and/or access to funds for a campaign,” Brown said. “The ideal candidate is another Katie Britt … an attractive female who is media savvy and is already connected to various factions within the Alabama political universe. Admittedly that is a ‘tall’ order, but that type of candidate could jolt the contest.” Brown said Moore and Marshall are the early favorites but noted that former President Donald Trump remains the “300 pound gorilla” in Alabama politics and that his endorsement could decide the race. “Of course, Trump continues to inject himself into these GOP primary contests and occasionally does so in unexpected ways,” Brown said, pointing to Trump’s decision to withdraw his endorsement of former U.S. Rep. Mo Brooks in 2022 and support Britt instead ahead of her primary victory. “Moore’s voting record in the House and Marshall’s record as AG on ‘hot button’ issues at the courthouse related to Trump’s agenda would appear to make both of them acceptable to the MAGA element in Alabama,” he said.John Sharp is a veteran reporter for AL.com covering the Alabama Gulf Coast, state politics, and key statewide issues.
