Varang looking serious in Avatar Fire and Ash

The Avatar movies are among the most successful films ever made. Financially speaking, they are literally two of the three biggest movies in history. Avatar sits atop the all-time box office with its $2.

9 billion gross accumulated over the years. Avatar: The Way of Water followed it up impressively with a $2.3 billion total. Now that Avatar: Fire and Ash is here, releasing in theaters worldwide on December 19, the weight of the franchise's box office history now rests on its shoulders. James Cameron is the king of delivering mega-sized financial hits, with Titanic also pulling in $2.2 billion. And after The Way of Water successfully brought his sci-fi franchise back, the pressure is on Fire and Ash to deliver huge sales once more. Every movie released in theaters wants to turn a profit by making roughly 2.5x its budget at the box office. Studios typically expect sequels to make more than their predecessors, too. But how does a movie like Fire and Ash find success when it's following up two of the biggest hits ever made? There is a sliding scale to the film being deemed a hit, as it could be a disappointment and a success all at once. Avatar: Fire & Ash Needs To Make At Least $1 Billion When talking about Avatar: Fire and Ash being a success, the specifics of its financials are important. Hollywood accounting is a tricky business, with 20th Century and Disney not confirming the exact cost of the sequel's production and marketing spend. But Variety reports that Avatar: Fire and Ash's budget is in the $400 million range. That is a fairly believable figure, as Avatar: The Way of Water reportedly cost $460 million to make. With the sequels filming back-to-back and using the same techniques, it would make sense that Cameron and the studios saved tens of millions making the third Avatar. Using the standard belief that it'd need to make 2.5x the $400 million budget to break even, Fire and Ash's goal becomes $1 billion. That is the lowest bar that it needs to clear to start to be considered a financial success. If the budget is any higher, then that figure increases too. The real goal may be significantly higher even if the budget is accurate. When The Way of Water was coming out, Cameron stated that it needed to finish as the tenth highest-grossing movie ever to break even . At the time, that would have been Furious 7, which made $1.5 billion. That's 3.2x The Way of Water's budget. Applying that same multiplier to Cameron's third film, Avatar: Fire and Ash needs to make $1.28 billion with its $400 million budget. This would allow the threequel to break even and be considered a financial success based on the box office performance alone. A $1.3 billion gross may be enough for Fire and Ash to break even and satisfy Disney and 20th Century's accounting books, but that would still be a disappointing result for all involved. It'd represent a near 50% drop from the previous film, which is horrendous. The $2 Billion Pressure On Avatar: Fire & Ash Fairly or not, there is pressure on the movie to make another $2 billion. That has been the standard for the franchise to this point. Only seven movies in history have achieved the lofty benchmark, but Avatar has two of them, and Cameron is responsible for three. Failing to reach this mark again will lead to inevitable discussions about audiences losing interest in the Avatar franchise. There's long been an argument that people don't really care about these films due to how small their cultural footprint is. The Way of Water proved Avatar's success wasn't a fluke, but the case against the franchise's relevance will be emboldened with a disappointing box office run. Fire and Ash finishing below $2 billion would continue a notable decline with how these movies perform. There was never any real expectation that The Way of Water would surpass Avatar's box office, and the 19.85% drop is still an incredibly impressive result for a sequel that came 13 years later. The Way of Water's box office profit was $531.7 million with this performance. A similar performance by Fire and Ash would put the movie below the $2 billion mark, finishing around $1.8 billion according to calculations. For any other movie, that'd be an unmitigated success. That'd still be well north of the break-even point for Avatar 3, too. But it might not be enough to stave off doubters and negative headlines. So, where does this leave the latest Avatar movie? Fire and Ash needs to perform better than The Way of Water to hit that $2 billion milestone. That is not expected to be the case. Early tracking for Fire and Ash's opening weekend points to a $110 million to $130 million performance in its first three days domestically. That'd be below The Way of Water's $134 million opening. Perhaps it will jump higher through strong word of mouth and general interest, but it could also flip the other way and come in under. The good news for Fire and Ash is that the Avatar franchise has never been about big opening weekends. The strength of these films has come with the continued interest in the weeks that follow, giving them strong legs for months. That is what Disney, 20th Century, and Cameron will be betting on to happen once more. If Avatar: Fire and Ash makes $1.8 billion or more, there's no reason it shouldn't be considered a huge success. That'd be a top 10 all-time result. It only needs to make $1 billion to break even, but the massive drop that would represent would be horrible and potentially end the franchise.
