After buying the ranch, the family invested more than $7 million updating infrastructure and building an ecologically efficient ranch operation that runs around 2,500 yearlings, he said. The family has also used the ranch for fishing, gravel biking and hunting, he said, and they have gone downhill and Nordic skiing nearby.
Mr. Barlow inherited Bar Cross, and in the 1970s wrote music there with Bob Weir, a founding member of the Grateful Dead, according to the book. “We were feeding about eight hundred cows every morning and then writing songs in the afternoon and evening,” Mr. Barlow wrote. In 1977, a teenage John F. Kennedy Jr. spent a summer working with Mr. Barlow on the ranch at his mother’s behest, according to the book. The Kennedy family didn’t respond to a request for comment.
They also remodeled several buildings, including the main residence. “The place has so much history. I thought it would be great to restore it, rather than build a new place,” Mr. Spaeth said. “It fit with our conservation goals, too, to keep our footprint on the landscape as limited as possible.”
