is really a fight against a straw man. In reality, CRT — the academic framework that views racism as a systemic part of U.S. society — has barely been taught in our middle and high schools. Where CRT has had its greatest influence over the past decade, however, is on U.

S. college campuses. Exposure to the theory has been empowering for students of color, many of whom reach their first year of college with limited contextual understanding of the structural disadvantages that have and continue to work against them. Coming out of high school, many students of color have only been exposed to the predominant view that society is mostly color-blind and that discussion of race-based differences is best avoided. That can prevent students from getting the most out of their college experience, obscuring the root causes of the financial and social obstacles many face on campus. The extent to which CRT is incorporated into curricula in colleges varies widely, depending on factors such as leadership attitudes and faculty expertise. But it has become more prevalent in the last decade or so. This development has helped empower students of color to form stronger bonds within their communities — as well as with other marginalized communities — to mobilize for greater diversity, equity, and inclusion on campus. A Black student arriving at college from a disadvantaged zip code, for example, faces a very different playing field than the average white student. The Black student is less likely to have parents who went to college, may lack funds to buy learning materials and take part in extracurricular activities, and will likely lack the social and professional networks that help students land jobs after they graduate. This helps explain why minority students have significantly less success at college than their white counterparts.complete their degrees within six years, according to a 2020 study from the Education Trust, a national nonprofit; on the other hand, 70% of white students do. The same study found that federal student loan default rates over 12 years are about 6 times higher among Black students and more than 2 times higher among Latino students compared with white students. CRT studies can play an important role in opening the eyes of minority students to why they face these embedded obstacles and disadvantages. At the same time, it can help them realize thethey have as a community, encouraging them to take pride in their identity and to join groups on campus that can provide resources and help level the playing field. By highlighting shared systemic disadvantages, it can also help the formation of intersectional alliances between groups representing underserved communities. The activism among students of color in recent years has been vital in pressuring college leaders to improve diversity, equity, and inclusion on campus.
