In Geoff Dyer’s selections, D.H. Lawrence’s work is as relevant to modern debates about speech and power as it was to the ones that fueled the notoriety in his lifetime
One of the things that makes these essays so shocking to read now is his insistence on identifying and describing theof things. We’re living in a cultural moment that’s very suspicious of that kind of thinking. If what we read in “Reflections on the Death of a Porcupine” strikes us as racist, why read it in 2019?
But I’m also just sort of unsettled all the time when reading him. Even when he’s describing Tuscan wildflowers or the beginning of spring. It’s always charged with a powerful intensity. What was it like to pick out a representative sample of his writing for this collection? Are there other Lawrences out there?
