As someone who cherishes the memories of Sundays spent in Cleveland’s embrace, I urge the Browns organization and the city’s leaders to think beyond short-term gains.

Santa Claus holds up a Browns banner before a December 2007 game in heavy snow at Cleveland Browns Stadium. Would Browns fans lose a legacy of braving the elements if they played all their home games indoors? Guest columnist Susan McCauley-Sadid says “yes.

A domed stadium may promise economic growth, increased event versatility, and comfort for fans, but at what cost? Part of the magic of Browns football lies in braving the elements. The icy winds off Lake Erie and the snow-blanketed field are woven into the memories of fans who take pride in Cleveland’s rugged resilience. A move to a suburban location with a modern, sanitized venue threatens to diminish the gritty spirit that’s synonymous with this team and city.

Here is what I heard from Browns fans during my visit to Cleveland in the pubs and restaurants we visited. I hope Browns ownership will listen to these concerns: Browns fans want a winning team; a dome investment is not the answer. Several long-term residents used the analogy: Does a new school make the academic scores improve in a failing school? Maybe … but usually, better teachers and leaders make it happen. Recruiting top talent and retaining frustrated top talent will make the team better.
