Pearl emphasizes elite transition offense and defense as priorities while preparing for the exhibition against Oklahoma State on October 15.
After taking over for his father Bruce Pearl who announced his retirement Monday afternoon, Steven was introduced as the 22nd Auburn men’s basketball coach Wednesday morning. “We knew the next head basketball coach at Auburn needed to be someone with extensive SEC coaching experience, someone with a demonstrated history of winning championships, someone who could lead and keep intact this incredible staff.
Someone who understands and appreciates what Auburn stands for,” Auburn athletics director John Cohen said Wednesday morning. He climbed up the ranks serving in multiple positions on the staff from 2015-2023, before being named the associate head coach in 2023. Now entering his first season at the helm of the basketball program, Pearl shared his expectations for the upcoming roster. “Offensively, we’re going to be a team that is going to try to be elite in multiple areas. We want to be elite in transition offense. We want to limit our turnovers. We want to make the simple pass so that we don’t give easy opportunities down at the other end,” Pearl said. “We want to be a great offensive rebound team. We want to be unselfish. We want to make free throws. Those are five things that have really been important for this program.” Auburn basketball practice started this week, and Pearl said he likes where his group is at to start the year. During his time at Auburn, Pearl had Auburn ranked in the Top 10 nationally in overall defense three times in the last four seasons and 13th in the country in effective field goal percentage defense. Pearl plans on keeping that same philosophy to help bring the team’s defense up to speed with its offense. “Defensively, we have got to be elite in transition defense. We have to be elite rebounding, and we have to be elite finishing possessions. Those are non-negotiables,” Pearl added. “Three out of the last four years, we had a top 10 defensive team in the country. There are just so many different areas that we have really thrived in and kind of built this thing on. This year’s team is going to look a little different because our offense right now is ahead of our defense.” Tahaad Pettiford is the only returning player from last year’s Final Four team. Auburn signed 10 new players in the offseason. Auburn added frontcourt players like KeShawn Murphy, Emeka Opurum, Sebastian Williams-Adams and Serbian big Filip Jovic. The backcourt will feature incoming freshmen Kaden Magwood, Simon Walker and Pettiford. On the wings the Tigers added Keyshawn Hall, Kevin Overton, Elyjah Freeman and Abdul Bashir.
