How do NBA voters decide the MVP? A panel of The Athletic writers who are voting this year or have voted in the past discuss the process in a two-part roundtable conversation. Part 1: Challenges of defining “value” on a season-by-season basis.
I put more value in team success, because winning is the easiest way to judge greatness. But it’s not the end all be all. I also place value in things like, who got better as the season went along? Who was the most reliable during the biggest moments? Who was the most consistent throughout the season? Who played in more games? Who brought less drama to the locker room? All that stuff matters when judging value.
Player, then there would be more focus on singular success and less of an onus to analyze each player’s impact on his team in totality. But it’s not. It’s Most, and that means you study the many ways in which MVP candidates dominated individually while also lifting those around them with their play. The context of each player’s story in that particular season matters to me, too. Did he have to carry his team more than normal because of significant injuries to key players around him. Did he play through the kinds of injuries that might have sidelined some players? I’ve said and written this many times before, but the adage about availability being a key ability is very true.
That’s why I’d be in favor of giving away additional postseason awards beyond NBA Finals MVP. If anything, I think collecting a number of those awards would bring more value to that player’s résumé than winning Rookie of the Year or Most Improved Player.
