Jordan Willis offered a remarkably humble take Thursday about heroically blocking a punt Saturday night to trigger the 49ers’ path into the NFC Championship Game.
SANTA CLARA — Jordan Willis’ blocked punt saved the 49ers’ season. Only he doesn’t want to say so.
They’re in the NFC Championship Game for the second time in three years. And for a third time this season, they’ll face the Los Angeles Rams, only this time with a Super Bowl berth on the line in Sunday’s 3:30 p.m. kickoff at SoFi Stadium. Willis said he couldn’t see punter Corey Bojorquez because he was too busy pushing long snapper Steven Wirtel, and the goal was to make Wirtel back into the punt.
Defensive end Nick Bosa raved about Willis postgame and again Thursday, especially regarding the humility aspect. DeMeco Ryans, the 49ers’ defensive coordinator, said that bulletin-board material has lost its luster in today’s games because of so much information from so many outlets and people. “I don’t know if particular material can get guys pumped up. How long does that last? With a game on the line in the third or fourth quarter, nobody thinking about what was said during the week.”Running back Elijah Mitchell is averaging 4.
