Europe is hot this summer, both literally and figuratively. Here, Houstonians have the home court advantage — we were born for this.
The first thing people asked after I returned from visiting France and Italy in July was,"How was your trip?"Unbeknownst to me and my travel companion, a historic heat wave was heading through France in late July. It was the second driest month ever recorded. While we sweated through our carefully planned outfits, news reports stateside forecast temperatures nearly 100 degrees Fahrenheit across the pond.
The good news for Houstonians is that the humidity and high temps feel like home. Well, maybe that's not exactly"good" news, though my point is that Gulf Coast natives will be able to cope. The general consensus in our Ubers — yes we opted for Uber over the metro this trip, eye-roll away — was that rolling down the windows would sufficiently cool the vehicle. When I asked our drivers to turn on the AC, most pretended not to understand me. And if I may say, my college French is still pretty decent.
At the nearby Hotel Royal Riviera, guests pay $600 per night to lounge by the pool — with a breath-taking view, I must say — and must enter the al fresco bathroom through a subterranean kitchen. The kicker? You guessed it, zero AC.
