Westworld season 4 episode 6 was too difficult for Aaron Paul to watch. 'I couldn’t watch episode six. I haven’t seen it, but I’ve seen everything else.'

Aaron Paul reveals that Westworld season 4, episode 6 was too painful for him to watch. HBO’s sci-fi series set in a futuristic world of sentient robots living alongside humans was its usual twisty and at times confusing self in season 4. At the center of all the maddening Westworld season 4 action was Paul’s Caleb, who began the season as a human but ended it as a human consciousness inside a host’s body.

Westworld fans of course know what happens when a human consciousness is placed inside the body of a host, after the horrific fate that befell human-to-host experiment James Delos back in season 2. Many years may have passed since Delos failed to pass the fidelity test, but in season 4, it’s shown that Charlotte Hale still has not licked the problem of host bodies rejecting pearls loaded with real human minds.

Oh my god, man. Episode six. Yeah, that was a rough one for me, for so many reasons. I couldn’t watch episode six. I haven’t seen it, but I’ve seen everything else. … Yeah, there are just certain things that I won’t allow myself to watch, and that was just such an undertaking. It was pretty brutal on me, so I just didn’t want to relive it.

Adding to the emotional strain for Paul in “Fidelity” was the episode’s finale, which saw Caleb finally escaping – as was Hale’s plan all along - and sending out a message to his own daughter Frankie, whom he has not seen for 23 years. Of course the viewer is aware that this isn’t actually Caleb but a host version of him, his physical body having died 23 years earlier.

Hopefully one day Paul will get over the lingering after-effects of shooting “Fidelty” and be able to sit down and enjoy his own outstanding work in the episode. In a season filled with lots of very typical Westworld zigging and zagging, the relatively focused “Fidelity” with its straight-forward prison-break storyline indeed turned out to be a big highlight. And Paul’s harrowing, and apparently quite personally traumatizing, performance was a big part of why the episode worked so brilliantly.
