Following the show's shock cancellation by HBO, fans have taken to petitioning to save Westworld season 5.
Fans of HBO's Westworld are petitioning to save the series' final season. A sci-fi western TV series, Westworld is based off of the 1973 Michael Crichton film of the same name. The series debuted in October 2016, and was praised for its effects, acting, and above all, storytelling. Westworld was renewed for a further three seasons, with each season garnering several major award nominations.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY At New York Comic-Con last month, Westworld co-creator Jonathan Nolan announced that season 5 would be the series' last. Nolan said that the plan had always been to make Westworld a five-season series, but as of October, HBO hadn't confirmed that season 5 would happen. However, with season 4 ending on a cliffhanger, the creators seemed fairly confident in the show's renewal, especially as they were in talks to come back.
Could Fans Save Westworld Season 5? While the petition doesn't have very many signatures yet, there is major precedent when it comes to fans saving their favorite programs. Another beloved sci-fi western series was Joss Whedon's Firefly, which was canceled in 2002 after only 11 episodes. Due to fan outcry, however, Whedon and Universal Pictures went on to produce the 2005 film Serenity to carry on Firefly's story.
Though major series like Westworld are loved by their cast and crew, there are none more dedicated than fanbases. With season 4 having set the series up for an epic finale season, fans are desperate to know how the groundbreaking sci-fi show will end, especially given that the creators seem to have always had a plan for season 5.
