TARRYTOWN, N.Y.—With 2,500 champion dogs arriving this weekend, aon the Hudson River aims to capitalize on hosting the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, which has strayed outside Manhattan because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The elite competition has been held annually at Madison Square Garden’s various sites for a century. But this year, instead of squeezing into an arena on top of one of the country’s busiest transit hubs, contestants can romp on the grassy grounds of Lyndhurst, 19th-century mansion in Tarrytown that looks like a castle and has majestic river views.
No spectators or vendors will be allowed because of health restrictions. Some dogs will miss the motivating cheers and applause of thousands of fans packed in the stands, owners say. “Lots of dogs love an audience,” said Leslie Woodward, as she sprinkled powder around the mouth of Jordy, her 5-year-old Barbet, to dry his shaggy hair. “They just love the attention.”
Contenders will have to make do with just their trainers, owners, show staff and reporters on hand. Competitions on Friday through Sunday will be outdoors or in big white tents set up for the occasion. Organizers held a press preview on Tuesday and expect to head back to Manhattan next year.
