West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin announced he has left the Democratic Party and registered as an independent.
My commitment to do everything I can to bring our country together has led me to register as an independent with no party affiliation," he wrote.
In 2022, Manchin said he wasn't seeking reelection to the senate, leading to speculation that he would run for president. He dispelled that rumor in February, saying he would not make a presidential bid. I will not be seeking a third-party run; I will not be involved in a presidential run,” he said at the time. "I will be involved in making sure that we secure a president who has the knowledge, has the function, and has the ability to bring this country together."
Manchin has long been an outspoken critic of the Democratic Party and an obstacle to many of President Joe Biden’s legislative priorities. He previously said that during the last 15 years he has seen both major political parties leave their constituents “behind for partisan extremism while jeopardizing our democracy.”
His most recent announcement leaves many questions unanswered. He did not disclose if he will continue caucusing with Democrats in the Senate, where they hold a slim majority. He also did not indicate if he will be running for higher office in the near future._________
