A 15-year-old girl was killed in a rollover crash involving nine Cyprus High School students who were traveling in a single car. A 15-year-old girl was killed, and four other teens, including the driver, were injured after a vehicle carrying nine students rolled over on an unpaved road near Cyprus High School.
The crash happened near 4100 South 8400 West in West Valley City. West Valley Police said the teens had left campus during their lunch period and were traveling east on the dirt road when they lost control. The vehicle rolled and crashed into a rock pile.“People fly by here even though there is literally no road. They fly by,” said Nataliia Malina, who lives near the crash site.“I see all the police cars, and it looked like something bad happened, and the kids were going back and forth,” she said.“We believe that speed may have been involved, although this is a dirt road and it wouldn’t necessarily have to be a tremendous amount of speed to cause an accident like this,” said Roxeanne Vainuku with the department. Neighbors said the road was supposed to be paved about a year ago, although KUTV has not been able to independently confirm that. Now, in the wake of the tragedy, they are calling for immediate action. “We want this to be fixed,” Malina said. “Would be nice to have actual road and stop signs, stuff like that.” The crash is intensifying the community’s demand to have the road paved and improved to prevent yet another tragedy. The Granite School District told KUTV that grief counselors will be available on campus on Wednesday to support students and staff.
