The earthquake struck Martin County, about 30 miles north of Midland. The center was more than 250 miles away from San Antonio.
One of the strongest earthquakes in Texas history struck the state Monday at 7:49 p.m. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, it was a magnitude 5.1 earthquake centered in northern Martin County , about 30 miles north of Midland in West Texas . That part of Texas is frequently rattled by small earthquakes, but they rarely rise above a magnitude 5.0. Only eight earthquakes in Texas history have registered as a magnitude 5.0 or higher.
Others along the Interstate 35 corridor, from Austin to Dallas, also reported feeling the earthquake Monday evening. It could also be felt as far north as Amarillo in the Texas Panhandle. After the initial large earthquake, the USGS has reported eight smaller aftershocks from Monday evening through Tuesday morning. Seven of these were weaker than a magnitude 2.5, and were likely not felt at all. The strongest aftershock was rated a magnitude 2.
