CLEVELAND , Ohio - Amid the ongoing government shutdown, families are facing difficult decisions, and their beloved pets are often caught in the crisis. However, a compassionate local business in West Park is providing a much-needed lifeline.
Pam Alerine, owner of Style Mutt Dog Boutique and Daycare, has been inundated with calls since announcing a special program on social media. She’s offering free dog food and treats to West Park dog owners who are receiving SNAP benefits. “There are so many dogs being surrendered now because of the financial difficulties people can’t handle their dogs anymore,” Alerine explains, highlighting the urgency of the situation. “So we just try to get involved in the community as much as we can.” To participate, residents simply need to present their SNAP ID and proof of West Park residency. Alerine has been deeply touched by the gratitude of those she’s helped. “It makes me really sad because the few people that have come in so far, they are just so grateful and you could tell that they’re in need and they appreciate it so much,” said Alerine. For struggling pet owners, Alerine also advises exploring other community resources. “In Slavic Village, there’s a neighborhood program. The APL helps out people sometimes... just look for the other resources, ‘cause there’s going to be more and more as needed.” Alerine is committed to continuing her aid for the duration of the shutdown, aiming to ease financial burdens on pet owners. “Until the point that I cannot do it on my own, I will not take their money.
