A woman in Dallas, Texas, has died from West Nile, a virus spread though mosquito bites. As much of the United States approaches peak mosquito season, officials are warning about increased circulation and urging people to protect themselves. On Tuesday, Dallas County Health and Human Services announced that a woman had died after contracting West Nile Virus, the seventh death from the virus in the U.S. this year.

This can cause inflammation of the brain or spinal cord and acute flaccid myelitis or a polio-like illness, says Pastula. Symptoms of severe West Nile neuroinvasive disease include: High fever Severe headachesStiff neckConfusion Muscle weaknessSeizuresVision lossParalysis Coma West Nile neuroinvasive disease can be life-threatening and fatal, especially in older people, says Weaver.
