The residents of West Mountain near Payson felt they weren't given an opportunity to say why they didn't want a 528-acre gun range in their community, so the public comment period was extended.
The time for public comment was supposed to end June 21, but once their concerns were brought to light, they were given an extension."What assurances do we have that we aren't going to get stray bullets on the playground I just built?" Alex Lathrop asked."Environmental concerns, agricultural concerns, Native American artifacts concerns,” Jon Cheney said.
BLM announced Tuesday that the public comment window would be extended until July 19. A public meeting will be held July 11."I feel like we've started the conversation now,” Cheney said. “And I think that's the most important thing. Last time it was just being railroaded on top of us, and now we're talking they're listening. Or at least we hope they are.
In response to that statement, Angela Lacey said, "We have a solution, and it's to ban the gun range." The residents said they've gotten much more organized and have thousands of petition signatures, at least a hundred people in a community group, and have even gotten a lawyer., in writing to BLM’s Salt Lake Field Office, or by emailing [email protected].
