As warmer weather arrives across Utah, law enforcement agencies said they are seeing an increase in motorcycle crashes. Officers with the West Jordan Police Department said that if they need to, they may step up enforcement efforts in response.
“We've definitely seen an increase in motorcycle crashes,” said West Jordan Police Officer Cameron Carbine. Police said the rise in crashes comes as more motorcycle riders return to the roads during the spring and summer months.
“They're out there more than we see them in the wintertime, and we are not used to seeing them,” Officer Carbine said. In recent weeks, 2News has reported on multiple motorcycle crashes across Utah. The most recent fatal crash killed a young man on Cougar Lane in West Jordan. Police said the cause of that crash remains under investigation.
“We will take more enforcement to enforce motorcycle-specific laws and any laws that may put any motorists on the road in danger, whether it's motorists in their vehicles or motorcyclists out there,” Officer Carbine said. According to data from the Utah Department of Public Safety, there have been 336 motorcycle crashes statewide this year, including nine fatal crashes. Another recent crash in West Jordan was captured on video provided to KUTV by Collision Cam.
According to West Jordan police, the motorcycle rider was arrested for DUI after allegedly losing control of the motorcycle, clipping another bike, and sliding into a car. Police said no fatalities were reported in that crash.
“We just want everybody to be more aware,” Officer Carbine said. “Just follow those posted speed limits. Make sure you're paying attention to everybody else on the road,” Officer Carbine said. The body of a missing 26-year-old was recovered at Grand Canyon National Park earlier this week.
